Secrets

I heard a man on the radio today say, "I was doing shows for 13 years before I discovered the secret." it seems to me I have heard that kind of line a lot of times before: someone works away quietly at something for years and finally discovers the secret. My ears perk up when I hear it because of course I think, Now I'm going to get to hear it without having to go through all that work. The problem is that whatever it is isn't really the secret; it's only a secret. The guy was really learning thousands of little secrets during those 13 years, the kind that come simply by doing, and after all that time he learned the 1,001st secret and that happened to be the one that finally put him over the top. So for me it would still only be the first secret and I'd still have a thousand to go, and it would still take me about 13 years.

There really aren't any secrets involved with getting somewhere you want to go; only steps. To get somewhere is not mysterious; you just start going there, and keep doing that till you get there.
